Sunday’s F1 High, Today’s Inside Story

From Kimi Antonelli’s emotional championship triumph to Christian Horner’s £100 million Red Bull exit, Formula 1 delivers drama both on and off the track

A Weekend of Highs

Was it coincidence that Christian Horner's memoir, Drive, was published just ten days before the Mexican Grand Prix? The timing couldn’t have been better. As Horner returned to the spotlight to promote his account of two decades at Red Bull, Formula 1 was preparing for a weekend that would deliver a historic moment.

At just 20 years and 68 days old, the boyish Italian became the youngest World Champion in Formula 1 history. He also ended Italy's 73-year wait for a title, becoming the first Italian champion since Alberto Antonio Ascari, who won consecutive championships for Ferrari in 1952 and 1953. Ascari was the first driver to achieve back-to-back Formula 1 titles.

‍

But beyond the records, it was the emotion that made Antonelli's achievement so memorable. Tears of joy accompanied the triumph of a young man whose life has now changed forever. There was something genuinely heartwarming about watching him struggle to contain his raw emotions - a reminder of the pure joy that lies at the heart of sport.

‍

"Already the lap before (the end of the race), I think I lost probably two seconds because I was already crying, basically. I couldn’t see clearly ahead.” (Kimi Antonelli, newly crowned F1 World Champion)

Christian Horner: The Highs and the Lows

Drive, published on 22 October 2026, takes readers from Horner's early ambitions as a racing driver to his appointment, at just 31, as team principal of Red Bull Racing in 2005.

‍

The team emerged from the remains of Jaguar's unsuccessful F1 venture and, under Horner's leadership, became a championship-winning powerhouse. Red Bull secured 6 Constructors' Championships and 8 Drivers' Championships during his tenure, with Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen delivering 4 consecutive drivers' titles apiece.

So why did Red Bull part company with him?

‍

One possibility is that the organisation had become too closely associated with Horner himself. When a leader becomes synonymous with success, the line between personal influence and institutional identity can blur. Was Horner perceived as having accumulated too much power?

In 2024, allegations of inappropriate behaviour by a female Red Bull employee brought intense scrutiny. Horner denied the allegations and was cleared following internal investigations. The controversy nevertheless contributed to a turbulent period for the team, alongside internal tensions and the departure of several senior figures.

His dismissal in July 2025 came as a shock, given his extraordinary record. Red Bull did not publicly provide a detailed explanation for the decision, but the split marked the end of one of the most successful chapters in modern Formula 1.

‍

Horner vs. Wolff: Who Has the Better Record?

‍

Horner's long-time rival, Mercedes team principal and CEO Toto Wolff, has an equally impressive record.

Mercedes won 8 consecutive Constructors' Championships between 2014 and 2021. During Wolff's tenure, the team also secured 7 Drivers' Championships before Antonelli's 2026 triumph brought that total to 8. On the Constructors' tally, Wolff leads vs. Horner. On the Drivers' tally, they are now level.

Both men have helped build championship-winning organisations, but their success reflects more than the drivers behind the wheel. It also depends on the many engineers, strategists, mechanics and leadership teams working behind the scenes.

Kimi Antonelli’s name will be added to this coveted trophy, earned by only 36 drivers so far

‍

And both organisations have demonstrated the value of investing in young talent. Red Bull helped develop Vettel and Verstappen into multiple world champions. Mercedes nurtured Antonelli through its junior program, giving him a highly focussed pathway to the top of the sport.

His championship is a vindication of that investment and a reminder that identifying tomorrow's champions can be just as important as winning today's race.

‍

The Business of Being Christian Horner

Horner's memoir arrived at an opportune moment. His departure remains a significant chapter in Formula 1 history, and fans will naturally be curious to hear his account of the rivalries, relationships and decisions that shaped his career.

Will Drive become a bestseller? There is no reliable public forecast of total sales or disclosed figure for Horner's advance and royalties. However, the ingredients for a commercially successful sports memoir are present: a recognisable personality, an extraordinary record, a controversial departure and the promise of behind-the-scenes revelations.

The timing looks commercially astute, whether or not the Mexican Grand Prix was specifically in mind. Publishing shortly before a major race gave the book an opportunity to benefit from renewed attention on Formula 1. Antonelli's championship then provided another compelling story to keep the sport in the headlines.

There is also the question of Horner's financial settlement. Recent reporting based on company filings put his compensation for loss of office from Red Bull Racing and Red Bull Technologies at approximately £100.5 million. That is an extraordinary sum reflecting reported contractual compensation.

Christian Horner's residence, The Glebe House, is a £9.2 million Grade II-listed Regency-style country manor and active farm on the Oxfordshire-Northamptonshire border featuring state-of-the-art equestrian stables, two swimming pools, a private boating lake and a helipad

‍

We do not know what Horner will earn from Drive; however, the book gives him an opportunity to shape his public narrative and maintain his visibility as he considers his future in Formula 1.

‍

The Wolffs Join the Bookshelf

Horner isn't the only prominent figure in the F1 world with a book to promote. Susie Wolff's memoir, Driven, was published on 23 October 2025 and became an instant Sunday Times Top 10 bestseller.

‍

The book chronicles her journey from racing driver to motorsport executive, including her work leading F1 Academy and her experience navigating a sport in which women have historically been underrepresented. It also offers personal insights into her relationship with Toto, who contributes an afterword.

What about Toto himself? He has said he would prefer to write his autobiography when he turns 80, rather than publish one while his career is still unfolding.

‍

Is Formula 1 Better Off Without Horner?

Few team principals have achieved what Horner did at Red Bull. His departure does not erase that record, nor does success guarantee that a leader will remain in place indefinitely.

Antonelli's triumph offers a timely reminder that Formula 1's future depends on the next generation. The same sport that gave Horner the opportunity to build a championship-winning organisation has now given a 20-year-old Italian the chance to make history with Mercedes.

Perhaps the real lesson is that Formula 1 needs both: experienced leadership capable of building great teams and the vision to recognise tomorrow's champions.

Horner has a remarkable story to tell. Whether Drive becomes a bestseller remains to be seen, but his legacy is already secure. And as Antonelli begins a new chapter, Formula 1 has once again demonstrated that its next great story is never far away.
