He’s Back!

José Mourinho Returns to His Home Country

José Mourinho is back in the spotlight and this time the story is dripping with irony.

Later this month, Benfica, his new team based in Lisbon, will face Chelsea at its home stadium, Stamford Bridge, in the Champions League. Mourinho has both resigned and been sacked by Chelsea over the years. This next matchup will be loaded with history, tension and perhaps even a touch of revenge for the Sadino whose full name is José Mário dos Santos Mourinho Félix.

“Who is the coach who says no to Benfica? Not me." (José Mourinho)

Bruno Lage was sacked on Wednesday, Mourinho stepped into his shoes on Thursday, just a few weeks after he was relieved of his duties by Turkish Club Fenerbahce

Mourinho first rose to fame at Porto, dominating Europe with a UEFA Cup in 2003 and a Champions League win in 2004. Chelsea quickly snapped him up and he turned the Blues into Premier League powerhouses, winning titles in 2005, 2006, and then again in 2015.

But Mourinho’s story is never just about trophies. He’s known for his clashes, his outbursts and his ability to create headlines as easily as he wins matches. Remember when he stormed out of a press conference at Manchester United demanding respect? Moments like that define him.

After Chelsea, he conquered Europe with Inter Milan, winning the Champions League in 2010 and had some success at Manchester United with the Europa League and League Cup in 2017; but, even there, he couldn’t fully restore the Club to its former glory. Tottenham? Another dramatic stint that ended without silverware, sacked days before a League Cup final. And Fenerbahce? His time there exploded in controversy when he publicly criticized the Board for failing to deliver the players he wanted, only to be sacked after a narrow Champions League play-off loss to … you got it, Benfica. Irony doesn’t get much sharper than that!

Now Mourinho is back in Lisbon, at the Club where it all began 25 years ago. Benfica has presidential elections approaching and Mourinho’s name is back on the table. For a man who has lived his career in dramatic highs and lows, this is poetic. He was once forced out by a president who wanted someone else; now, he has returned as the chosen figurehead. And the drama continues: Benfica will soon visit Newcastle in December, another Club with a deep personal connection for Mourinho. Early in his career, he worked under Sir Bobby Robson there and even considered joining the Magpies to bring Robson along.

Mourinho’s career is the stuff of soap operas - trophies, scandals, sudden exits and dramatic returns. Every move seems loaded with history, revenge or personal symbolism. Episode 3 of Netflix's The Playbook, titled "José Mourinho: A Coach's Rules for Life", delves into the philosophy and leadership style of the renowned football manager. In this 35-minute episode, Mourinho shares insights into his career, emphasizing the psychological aspects of coaching and team management. He discusses his approach to motivating players, handling media pressures and fostering a winning mentality within his teams. The episode provides a highly entertaining glimpse into Mourinho's methods and mindset, offering viewers an understanding of what drives one of football's most successful and controversial figures.

Facing Chelsea and Newcastle in the Champions League adds layers of tension, making this season feel like a full-circle reckoning. Fans, pundits and rivals alike will be watching: can 62 year-old Mourinho stir the pot again and show the football world that he’s still the master of drama and dominance? One thing is certain - wherever he goes, the headlines follow. Stay tuned!
