She has a name that is known by everyone, with no need for a last name. That’s powerful.
She’s worth hundreds of millions more than Lady Gaga, who some say is her arch nemesis.
I must admit that I was never much of a Madonna fan, but my respect for her completely changed when I saw her perform in “Swept Away”, directed by her then British husband, Guy Ritchie. A remake of the classic 1974 movie written and directed by Lina Wertmueller, starring Giancarlo Giannini and Mariangela Melato, the 2002 version starred Giancarlo Giannini’s son and Madonna. Who would have thought the remake would have any hope. It blew my socks off.
And then, of course, I love the BMW commercial that Ritchie also directed shortly thereafter, much in keeping with Madonna’s intolerable “Swept Away” character.
Madonna’s acceptance speech when she was awarded Billboard’s Woman of the Year in 2016 remains fresh in my mind as if it was just delivered. It took guts to say what she had to say about being a woman in the music business in front of a live audience of her peers, while also being broadcast around the world.
Fast forward to 2023. Madonna has announced a new tour to celebrate her work over the past 4 decades.
Tickets immediately sold out and additional dates have now been added. Why would Madonna start her tour in Vancouver? Your guess is as good a mine, but Mayor Ken Sim must be very happy for the free publicity. The Celebration Tour kicks off in the city where Botox was invented on July 15th.
What I find strange is that the Tour will be a retrospective show, yet Madonna claims that her biggest fear is running out of creative ideas. So, all of a sudden, is it okay to succumb to fans’ wishes and still be “on brand”?
“A lot of people say I am fearless, I’m courageous, I take risks. Yes, it’s true.” (Madonna)
“I am excited to explore as many songs as possible in hopes to give my fans the show they have been waiting for.” (Madonna)
In tow will be Bob the Drag Queen a.k.a. Caldwell Tidicue, winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race (Season 8). I like him!
Pop music’s most outrageous diva set out to rule the world. If concert ticket sales alone are a measure of success, she has indeed done that many times over. Let’s see what this showgirl has up her sleeves. Madonna is still going strong and is still worthy.
